Anna Biller is the Wonder Woman of feminist sexploitation films. Almost ten years ago, she made waves with her subtly parodic yet absolutely charming orgy-mystery theater film VIVA, and now she returns with a Technicolor (nightmare) dream that captivates and enchants like a communiqué from another world or at least a parallel dimension. Elaine is, in many ways, a superwoman and incredibly charming: her new apartment is a Victorian Gothic jewel shimmering in all the colors of the night, where she concocts her various potions and powders. She wants, no, she must find a man who loves her. However, this proves far from easy, not least because her spells are far too potent.
Anna Biller is a renaissance woman. She not only directs but also designs all the costumes and sets, incredibly detail-oriented and in tune with the era she wants to evoke: THE LOVE WITCH is her ode to the erotically charged, feminist-undercut thrillers of the 1960s, articulated with a melodramatic gesture for the purpose of maximum emotional impact. And with a filmmaker like Biller, it goes without saying that she has captured all this on 35mm film. THE LOVE WITCH is a film into which one wants to fall, to cover oneself with, to bathe in.
