In the fall of 2023, an eight-member team from Austria and Germany embarked on a fascinating expedition into the vastness of the Rub al-Khali – the "Empty Quarter." Their mission was clear: to complete a full crossing of the largest sand desert in the world.
Twice the size of Germany, the seemingly endless sand dunes, reaching up to 300 meters in height, stretch across the Arabian Peninsula. A 1,500 km journey through an open, largely unknown, and mostly unexplored desert landscape. The goal: to gather new scientific insights and to conquer a new, previously unattempted route through the desert.
Is the team well-prepared? Will their food and water supplies be sufficient? Can they even find a way through the infinite maze of dunes? The outcome remains completely uncertain!
Expedition leader Thomas Brandl-Ruttner takes you on a breathtaking adventure, immersing you in a mesmerizing natural world that has remained unchanged for thousands of years and is virtually unknown to most people.
