“HOME IS ALSO THE MOST DANGEROUS PLACE IN THE WORLD FOR WOMEN, TRANS PEOPLE, NON-BINARY PEOPLE, QUEER PEOPLE, AND CHILDREN. NOWHERE IS THE DANGER OF EXPERIENCING VIOLENCE AS GREAT AS AT HOME” (Laura Leupi)
Every third woman* between the ages of 18 and 74 in Austria has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since the age of 15. Almost every sixth woman* has been affected by threats of physical violence in adulthood. Over 16% of women* between the ages of 18 and 74 experience physical and/or sexual violence from partners, so-called domestic violence. This is shown by a survey on violence against women*, conducted by Statistics Austria on behalf of Eurostat and the Federal Chancellery between 2020 and 2021. The topic of violence against women*, which should actually be referred to as male violence, is repeatedly downplayed or dismissed as a marginal phenomenon. It is denied that it is a deeply structurally embedded societal problem.
In her piece “Application for the Greatest Possible Distance from Violence,” Felicia Zeller interweaves, based on real interviews, the biographies of women, who have found their way to the women's shelter, with supportive voices from women shelter staff or doctors, the injurious voices of perpetrators, and the careless voices of those who look past the problem.
From this, a powerful score has emerged that weaves together fragments of life and poetically rubs against the search for happiness and real constraints. Despair turns as quickly into the absurd-comic as family peace sometimes turns into senseless violence in certain partnerships. The evening does not want to get caught up in gestures of concern or portray women as victims but rather give space to strong voices that are setting out to reshape their lives.
